Bad enough colliding, but wtf was the CO and crew doing at the time?

How the hell can you not see a cargo ship that big coming?
Naval vessels such as that should easily be able to avoid it, with, or without radar.

It seems it hit the sleeping quarters at night, hence the loss of life. But it also suggests even the radar operator was asleep, frankly.

Even so you though it would be spotted by someone on deck or the bridge, even at night.

"Boat this big don't exactly stop on a dime..."

Saw a picture of the ship that rammed the Fitzgerald, it was fairly major container carrier. That weight of ship has a massive amount of inertia, even if they push the engines fully in reverse, plus the bridge is at the rear so visibility of the front isn't great at all. Pretty much relies on RADAR, which of course military ships are specifically designed to confound. It was definitely up to the Fitzgerald to get out of the way in this case. Not seeing a sodding great container ship bearing down on them... Somebody will be manning supply runs to the antarctic for a few years.

But you'd expect a navy destroyer to be almost able to turn on a dime.

Certainly they can perform turns that would cause all sorts of trouble for maritime vessels of any similar size. However in this case given what appears to have happened - Fitzgerald got hit midships and pushed aside by the cargo vessel - all they'd have had to have done was whack on the engines and they'd have been out of the way in seconds.

Everything suggests they literally didn't see the cargo ship at all until it was pretty much right on top of them. Very odd indeed.
