to be or not to be, civil war ...

Spain sends in ARMY to Catalonia as it pushes region to brink over referendum

A spokesman for the European People’s Party, the largest party in the European Parliament, said: “Someone needs to tell the Catalan people the truth. If you contest the law to abandon Spain you also need to know that you abandon the EU.”

Does the EU stand or fall as a result ...

After the EU barely uttered a peep about the violence, I doubt the Catalan people will give a [LIFTED].

It will be interesting if Catalonia does gain independence, they will need to release their own currency, erect borders and set up customs' posts and negotiate trading agreements with the EU... Once everything runs stably, they will be able to apply for EU membership.

If they gain independence, then they will basically have to do their own Brexit.

I don't condone what the Spanish authorities have done and are doing; but I also don't think that the Catalans have thought this through. Maybe that was why the leader has been prevaricating the few days and not actually stating whether he has declared independence or not...

If they did gain independence and apply for EU membership would Spain veto it?
I believe there has to be unanimity for new members to join.

I think they ave already said they would - and they might get Italy & France to do the same as they both have regions that would like independence

If people think the UK will have a hard time dealing with the EU after. Brexit, that's nothing compared to how hard Spain will make it for Catalonia. They won't let them in the EU, I suspect they'll oppose raid trade deals etc.
I wonder how the EU would test react of Catalonia tried to form s trade deal with the UK?

Catalonia referendum: EU bosses show solidarity with Spain king and prime minister.

But the appearance from the bloc’s three most senior figures - Jean-Claude Juncker, Antonio Tajani and Donald Tusk - alongside the Spanish monarch and premier Mariano Rajoy will leave little doubt as to where their loyalties lie.

Catalan president Carles Puigdemont has previously pleaded for help from the EU to act as a mediator for succession talks to ensure a smooth transition.
