News CLICKYA sad day for science. I'll bet you he'll be on a bank note within the next fifty years.

Very sad, he was a strong advocate for the NHS too and a cool sense of humour

Brilliant scientist and didn't take himself too seriously (see Star Trek TNG, Futurama, The Simpsons and The Big Bang Theory to name a few). A great loss to planet Earth.
On the other hand, 76 isn't a terrible age to get to without motor neuron disease, getting there with it is a tribute to Hawking and all those who cared for him throughout his life.

Given that the doctors' prognosis was that he would die in 1968, he did quite well really...
RIP

The world is poorer for it. I read some of the Daily Mail comments to see what the public reaction was. Whilst most were positive, there were a couple who (through various aliases) basically slagged him off, viewing Hawking as the anti-Christ, or asking what inventions he made that were useful. They were largely US-based commenters. My jaw just dropped. Either they were trolling, or they were missing a lot of IQ points.

A good friend of mine in Italy put up a status saying similar and it was the god brigade involved.
