Computer engineers have the worst road accident records while farmers are the safest drivers, it has been disclosed.

Published: 7:00AM BST 07 Sep 2009
Computer engineers topped the list of those professions making the most accident claims in the last three years, according to figures from Churchill Car Insurance.
The second most-claiming professionals were sales managers, followed by chefs, students and doctors.
In contrast, farmers had the best road safety records based on claims made, followed by aircraft fitters, stores personnel and ambulance drivers.
Tony Chilcott, head of Churchill Car Insurance, said: ''The poorer claims experience associated with computer engineers, sales managers, chefs and doctors most likely reflects the long hours they work in a very stressful job. As a result, they are more likely to be tired when driving and possibly distracted.
''Estate agents make lots of journeys in their cars during the day – dashing to see clients in urban areas and often parking wherever they can when they arrive.''
He went on: ''Conversely, those who have jobs which involve working outdoors or who drive for a living tend to have fewer accidents.
''Farmers have a lower claims frequency because they live and work in rural areas with less congestion, which are likely to be more tranquil to work in than a stressful office environment.''
Churchill's top 10 most frequently claiming occupations are:
1. Computer engineer
2. Sales manager
3. Chef
4. Student
5. Doctor
6. Estate agent
7. Surveyor
8. Customer adviser
9. Hairdresser
10. Social worker

When I started working in computers in 1987, we were one of the highest loaded groups. We were recommended to use a different designation that computer programmer or analyst when applying for insurance.

One of the biggest problems at the time was that a lot of top programmers were being head hunted and were given ever more money and better cars. "You have an XR3i? We'll give you a Sierra Cosworth." "You have a Sierra Cosworth? We'll give you a Porsche Turbo..." There were a lot of programmers wrapping themselves around lamp posts after a hard days at the office.

The other problem was, we were using terminal screens or computer screens all day long, therefore constantly focusing on something a metre or so from our heads. We then got into cars and were having to focus long. A lot of people had problems concentrating on distant objects, so they had a lot of accidents.

When other professions started using VDUs on a regular basis, they also got more heavily weighted. It actually became a question on insurance forms.

That said, I have had 3 car accidents and I was knocked off my bike by somebody performing an illegal U-turn, which is roughly one accident every 350,000 driven miles. I don't know what the average is for the general population.

Working shifts in hospitals means I'm unsafe after a heavy nightshift. My body clock is screwed up, I can't concentrate and I'm knackered. Yet this would all be resolved with onsite accommodation which hospitals have converted into offices and deny an area of rest.

Surely how likely you are to crash should depend on the person not the job?!

I've never crashed in around 9 years of driving yet I have to pay more because I am "more likely to crash" than someone else?!

I know plenty of students and hairdressers who have crashed more than once in a lot shorter time?!

The problem is some professions are, generally speaking, more likely to have accidents than others. You have to temper that against no claims discount...

Your base is more than a hairdresser who has crashed twice in the last 5 years, but your premium will still be less...

Unfortunately you, as a person, are a meaningless statistic. A thousand other people in your profession make a quantifiable average. :(

Hmm... I'm a director of my Dad's company (for legal reasons and stuff). I might put that as my occupation next time I renew.

Sadly the figures are based on what we are led to believe are cold, hard, actuarial statistics. The companies will simply say that this or that group has higher\lower than the "norm" of accidents per 1000 mile or whatever. A cynic might also suppose that they are also weighted by "can pay \ will pay \ must pay" loadings. People who must drive are likely to be loaded-up by the Insurance Companies' "cartel" (geddit?) as they have little option but to pay.

Not from here though, because Churchill insurance doesn't cover Northern Ireland.

I wonder if this applies to muslims, aren't they more likely to turn to terrorism and then crash into things deliberately.

Hmm, some figures:

Muslims in Britain - 2.4 million
Number of muslims involved in a terrorist attack involving a car - 3
Percentage of Muslims involved in a terrorist attack involving a car - 0.000125

Yeah, insurance companies are going to go wild over that kind of trend.

What's the phrase - 'never been in a accident but seen loads?'

Acts of terrorism are not usually covered by insurance. This obviously sucks big time if you happen to be a victim, but it does mean that premiums are unchanged by any real or perceived statistical terrorist risk.

Should that not be "premiums are perceived to be unchanged" when of course the risk of terrorism whether it be in this country or not is actually going to increase premiums as most underwriters are multinational and do actually insure some things against terrorism in some countries.

This of course is disgusting as terrorism is an imaginary media construct, don't get me wrong I'm not saying there isn't a whole bunch of pissed off people blowing s h i t up, I just don't think it's fair to refer to the Americans as terrorists anymore since Barak Osama became president of earth.

The original point I was trying to make was that would Muslims not be unfairly penalised by insurance companies because insurance companies believe based on statistics they are more likely to become terrorists.

Furthermore, back to the original point, I think it's true, I've lost count of the amount of times I've nearly hit joggers driving home after a twelve hour night shift.

Usually because I'm trying to write an email I forgot to send, on my laptop as I drive home.
