Who's to say how you should handle that sort of thing, other than with common sense? You'll always wind up upsetting someone (usually a prat  )...

Personally, if I were to have sex change, I would move schools rather than face bullying. Despite whatever Draconian policies you may put in place, you're still going to have problems.

As for teens, most of the ones I've encountered these days are nowhere near mature enough to deal with such issues as sexuality and gender identification. Puberty is a time of physical, mental
and emotional stress. Adolescents are often the ones confused about their sexuality and personal identity. I would agree it would be better to wait until after puberty when one has reached a stage where they are more grounded in their thoughts and feelings and are less likely to make the wrong decision.

However, it is far better for the school to handle things they way it did - it shows how good and supportive schools can be.

There are glaringly obvious problems with that. Male and female children aren't much different prior to puberty. If you start hormone treatment before the changes take place, then "he" could become a convincing woman, rather than a man in a skirt with no penis.

The option of "delayed puberty" used elsewhere sounds like a better compromise for some patients, but there's no medical insight offered by this article so it's difficult to judge. All the article says is that the school handled it badly, although I can't imagine any really good ways to handle such a thing. Even if he really looks like a girl and moved school, everyone would soon find out s/he was a trap.

Most kids have a rough enough time as a teenager. I can't imagine anything more scary than making a change like this. Kudos to the kid for doing it so publicly....

I swear to god this country, this planet is totally f u c k e d.

On a slightly different point, I can't think of a worse place to get "news" from than "News" Irrational.
