I can recall BT themselves making a small fortune out of a type of phone scam - quite a few people I know had all these dodgy numbers show up on their bills that turned out to be some sort of issue with unsanctioned dial-up connections.
BT of course denied there was a problem until the amount of people complaining meant they couldn't any longer, and even then their customers were made to jump through hoops to get the claims dropped and/or their money back...
