Are Men Or Women More Likely To Be Hit By Lightning?

The numbers tell the story: Of the 648 people killed by lightning in the U.S. from 1995 to 2008, 82 percent were male. And as much as we were hoping to uncover a biological cause—extra iron in the male cranium, perhaps, or the conductive properties of testosterone—it turns out men are... just kind of stupid. “Men take more risks in lightning storms,” says John Jensenius, a lightning safety expert with the National Weather Service.
Men are less willing to give up what they’re doing just because of a little inclement weather, Jensenius says, and will continue to engage in pastimes that make them vulnerable, such as fishing, camping and golfing. Recreational or sports-related activities are involved in almost half of all lightning-related deaths.

Peter Todd, a behavioral psychologist at Indiana University, suspects the difference between the sexes boils down to the basic risk-versus-reward systems that have been part of our biological wiring for thousands of years. For women, Todd explains, the priorities are to protect one’s reproductive role and to care for offspring, which outweighs any inclination to attract potential mates by exhibiting bold behavior.
But for men, Todd says, the risk of getting struck by lightning could be outweighed by the reward of proving to other men—and potential female mates—that they’re not afraid of getting struck by lightning. This is particularly true for young men, who have the most to gain by impressing others, thereby raising their status as attractive, daring, healthy mates in the dating pool. And then, zap!

Golfers - wide open spaces, metal & graphite clubs in the air...it's a bit obvious.

And yet, it still happens.

I would have easily guessed it would have been largely men struck by lightning. I love thunderstorms and provided it is not raining, will stand out in the backyard. I particularly love the 'atmosphere' prior to a thunderstorm.

+1, if you haven't been killed you haven't lived

I suspect the cause of death in a lot of cases is 'Well, I'm out here/drenched now...' ;)

Well yes, indoor golf isn't quite the same...

That's true, but you'd have thought golfers would have the sense to think that playing in a thunderstorm wasn't the brightest idea!
Mind you, perhaps it's just natural selection at work - the smarter survive. ;)

Ie the non golfers?

Women probably rush indoors when a storm hits, whereas men probably work outside more than women, which means that they are outside more to start with. So as a result it does not take a lot for men to dominate the stats.

Actually an 18 hole par 4 or 5 course can take upwards of 4 hours to complete - more than enough time for a storm to roll in. I've been caught out on around the 12th hole before now. It is strangely exhilarating...

Another big percentage is down to people being hit by, or on, large open bodies of water.

I figure there are more fishermen than fisherwomen.

Probably it's also because men are generally taller? if a big lump of static electricity is looking to ground, it's going to go for the tallest earthed object in range. If you have a group of people as candidates, the tallest person is surely likely to be a bloke?

Jon

I would have thought that the giant earrings and wires in bras would make excellent conduction routes as well.

I would imagine that the odds are swayed by the fact that men are more likely to do outdoor work to start with and as such be at greater risk purely on a statistical basis regardless of size.

The headline "Men go outside while women stay at home or at the shops" might have been accurate.

An alternative theory is that Zeus is really a very angry misandristic woman in drag.

I'm taking your theory on but actually blaming Thor:

That's clearly a female Russian shot putter in drag ;)
