I don't agree with just expanding the database for the sake of it (as seems to be suggested here), but I don't see why this loophole shouldn't be closed...

They are clutching at straws. They used incorrect evidence as the basis of the retention of it anyway.

If the government are so in favour of it then they should all be put on the DNA database with immediate effect. That and their families. Then start with all civil servants, we need to make sure that they are entitled to get access to secret files so cannot risk criminals getting involved. If this is a way to detect future crimes then the politicians should be on the list with immediate effect.

Also the removal of Damian Green MP DNA should be blocked until the same law applies to us all. No special privileges for MP's.

If the person has been arrested and charged then the police have until the charges are dropped, or the person is acquitted to test the DNA sample against outstanding cases. After acquittal or charges are dropped then the samples must be destroyed. That seems fair to all concerned. The sample officer should be held personally liable if DNA is held after that date.
