So why not quit? Even in a recession there are other (albeit low paid) jobs out there.
Surely being poorer is better than feeling suicidal.

From a news report this morning, it was described as the french workers were actually asked to deliver to targets. Something they never had to do when the company was a publlically owned. So is it a clash of highly secure jobs in the french public sector with very little being asked of them to the more ruthless competative business world (with the proviso that so many companies do not want to hire people in France due to the massive problems of actually getting rid of them)

As long as everyone has a wage cut then people do not mind so much. If everyone is in the same boat things aren't so bad. You feel a failure if you are the only one.
