 Just saw this on the BBC site. Ridiculous. He's only been President for 8 months, what has he actually done in that time?

No there are far more deserving cases. I like the man but he simply has not done that much yet.

Genius  .

Frankly, it would only be more undeserving if they gave it to Robert Mugabe. He's done next to nothing for world peace and he apparently won't even be able to stick to his pre-election promise of closing Camp X-Ray by Christmas.

Well the article did outline the various things he has done which were the basis for the decision (nuclear disarmament being a big one).

However, it does seem to be peculiar to give it to him this early on in his career in politics...

I agree. If they awarded it on the basis that he wants nuclear disarmament then why not every Miss World they generally say World Peace during their interview! :D

I head an interesting contrast between Barak Obama and Jimmy Carter on the radio.

Carter started the SALT treaty talks that eventually rid the world of many nuclear weapons and brokered the Camp David deal between Israel and Egypt that basically made the middle east if not stable, then at least not likely to break into all out war at any time. He had to wait 20 years after his presidency ended (and much lobbying on his behalf, although he never commented on whether he should get one) before he got a Nobel Peace Prize.

Obama has done er.. well.. squat. And he's been given one after a few months in office.

I hope Obama does do something in his presidency that makes him worthy of the honour, I really really do. But to give him one at this point is an embarrassment to the honour and, if you read the body language of his speech this evening about it, an embarrassment to him as well.

Yes Jimmy Carter would be a better recipient. I have heard that Obama should have refused it, then he could still get the cachet from being awarded it without the problems. He will find it hard to live up to now.

I remember reading in Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman about when Richard Feynman won the Nobel Prize for physics. The first he heard about it was when a reporter from Time magazine rang him up. During an off the record chat where Feynman was considering not accepting the prize, the reporter basically convinced him that it would be far harder to reject it than to accept it. To my knowledge, no one has ever rejected one to date apart from one of the Russian authors and that was because he wasn't allowed to travel by the Russian State over fears he would defect.
