I've never actually been to Stonehenge, but I understand that you can't actually walk up to the actual monument anymore, which is a bit of a shame really.

No, during the normal course of events you have to stick to a roped off walkway around the site, a good few hundred feet away. I've been there with a grove on Solstice a few times though and (apart from the pot-smoking hippy idiots) it's a really fabulous experience.

They rope you off because they don’t want visitors to chip bits of the stones off as souvenirs any more.

Well, partly, but also because Stonehenge has suffered some really apalling abuse in the past with cans of paint and hammers.

I guess they also want to protect the grass around the monument. Keeping folk at a distance on a managed path makes that easier.

It's about time the monument had something better - I was underwhelmed when I visited. Some kiosks, a tunnel and a gift shop. That was about it. And a fairly steep entry price too. Mind you, I did have a nice cup of coffee and a cookie on the way out, that wasn't bad. Photographically, the pics I'm most pleased with from that visit aren't of the stones at all.

Yes i agree and the one group who should be allowed access are the druids. They are hardly likely to damage it.
