The BBC had an interview with someone from Manchester Airport on this scanner. The scanner viewer is in another room and without the ability to see the person who is going through. Though I would expect the security checks on the room to be very high. A personal security clearance, with no problems of sexual offences. No cameras in the room either.

I saw the TV programme too.

because they use X-rays "they do not make an image".

Er, yes they do. The reason for the use of X-rays here is to produce an image, which is then viewed by a human's eyes.

IMO it doesn't amount to child pornography.

I thought passengers had the right to refuse to use it and get a pat down search instead?
If parents have an issue with the scanner, they can do that instead.

Jesus Christ, did anybody consider the potential pitfalls before a small fortune was spent?

To be honest I have no problem with the pat down. Though they better not have any hot female customs officers doing it. Otherwise it might be a case of "Is that a gun in your trousers or are you pleased to see me?" :D
