I heard about this at the time. People were calling and texting the radio station telling them it was dangerous but they laughed it off and carried on. |

Blame culture. I'm sorry but sure the radio should not have organised this event but how many stupid people took part in it? |

Huh? The radio station are clearly guilty, they should have researched this and made sure it was safe before inviting people to participate. I don't think people can be blamed for having a reasonable expectation for 'competitions' to be safe to participate in (in so far as is reasonable). |

I dont agree. I think they're jointly responsible. I think the radio station has a duty to make sure what they were planning was safe but I would also expect the competitors to have a little think about that themselves too. To go into in blindly thinking that drinking excessive amounts of water and not peeing is a safe thing to do is a little short sighted by both parties. |

Like most people, I'm sure, I had no idea you could poison yourself by drinking too much water. Water is good for you, isn't it? (Actually, I did know that excess water intake can be bad, but I certainly didn't know it could be fatal.) So, in this case, what appeared to be an innocuous game hadn't been thought through properly by the organisers. I doubt they realised excess water intake was dangerous either. As a participant in such games, the players would expect the organisers to make the risk assessment, wouldn't they? |

No - vitamin C can kill in larger doses, and that’s good for you.

Well, yes. But they didn’t. |

Not only is this a classic example of 'survival of the fittest' but also a classic example of the stupidity of some organisations. Fair enough if they didn't know that intaking a large amount of water can kill you then they should at least have listened to the people who were calling and telling them it was dangerous. Or at least carried out a risk assessment. You would have thought that if they were going to run a competition they'd have thought "hm, I wonder if this will KILL our listeners?". |

The not peeing part is the bit I already knew would not be good for you. ![]() |

So a radio station is guilty for someone not giving up when they should? That is like saying supermarkets and motor companies should be responsible for all drink-driving accidents. It's showing a lack of self-responsibility and unless they are mentally impared is a fair judgement to assume people will quit when they can't go on any more |

There are people who get high from drinking water... If you drink enough, you get high, but you can also drown or suffer from water intoxication. |

Let's be clear here, the radio station organised the contest. Supermarkets do not arrange piss-ups. If at any stage they thought it was getting dangerous they should have stepped in, but as it stands they were woefully unaware of the dangers and were at best irresponsible, at worst criminally negligent in their duty of care to participants. |

Well lets make it clearer, no one forced anyone to drink water, just like no one forces anyone in a supermarket to buy alcohol. They were encouraged. They were free to quit at any time like any psychological experiment. If I said I would give you £100 to drink 200 pints in one sitting would you do it? You're making excuses for plain ignorance, if I see you drinking to win a prize I'm not going to tell you to stop, it's your own responsibility. Maybe they could have thought of the risks... But ANY risk analysis on this would throw it up as an incredibly low risk index given the likelihood of it happening, I am sure they covered in case people urinated on the floor/equipment as a higher impact/probability. Next you'll be complaining that people on the Ultimate fighter or any other physical show get injured that it's not their fault. Grow a pair and accept that people are stupid and that the nanny state culture is now relied upon by so many http://www.darwinawards.com/ If you aren't smart enough to look at the risks yourself (not to mention any medical risks) then you deserve what you get tbh http://www.darwinawards.com/stupid/stupid1998-16.html |
