http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/352972/asus ... ok-in-2010 So what differentiates a smartbook from a netbook, or is it just marketing BS? ![]() |

ARM processors are a lot simpler processors and cost a lot less, especially when on the scale of their purchases. The ARM7 cpu I use in my advanced architecture module costs practically nothing compared to an Atom or similar SOC setup, the advantage is ARM (they will no doubt be using an ARM11) processors can run at very low voltages due to their usages. The downside is the instruction set which will mean potential issues with OS/software if they don't go down the custom route |

Those ARM processors are used in tonnes of things already aren't they Fin? Am I right in thinking that there'll also be no restriction on the processors ARM will allow to be used, unlike Intel/AMD who limit the processor power of netbooks so that they won't take away from the laptop market? |

Yes, I knew they were almost literally in a sense as cheap as chips ![]() ![]() |

Yep, mobile phones to home heating systems to remote for car keys in some cases, incredibly versatile, low power consumption ARM make the designs, anyone after can produce it with a licence, so it keeps the market competitive also so things like clock speed etc there is no manufacturer cap AFAIK |

The ARM processor - you can't take it back and get a Windows version if you don't get on with the pre-installed Linux. You'll also need to wait for proprietary software, like Skype, to be converted for it - and it takes them long enough to get capable versions of Skype for Intel Linux out there! |

They'd better explain all that to Joe Average ![]() Though I seem to recall ARM saying M$ would be somewhat obliged to play nice with their chips in the future, maybe the smartbooks are what they were getting at... Still a bold claim though ![]() |
