http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... waste.htmlI'm amazed this hasn't been a bigger story in general tbh - I only heard about it when my dad said it cropped up on Watchdog So what do we think? Sounds like a great wheeze for Tesco if you ask me, how many of those vouchers will be lost or forgotten by the consumer by the time they're at Tesco again?

I prefer to buy one and get one free there and then. Most of the things I buy in this manner can be kept for months without problems - tins/jars of food, shower gels, frozen foods etc. The things that perish quickly, like bread, I buy as much as I need.
My family are the same - we buy what we need and are likely to use. If there's an offer say on small cakes, we only buy it if we're all likely to eat it within a week, otherwise we don't bother.

That's me (us in the family) too, and I often use it for things like shower gels, vitamins etc. I think the focus will be on short-life stuff at a guess though...

I think it is a good idea. I often see the 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 deals and still only buy one item, because I wouldn't be able to use the second one before it went bad - I much prefer discounted deals; I usually buy my coffee when it comes down from 3.99€ for 500g down to about 2.79€ for 500g at Lidl, the same for my Head & Shoulders shampoo.

I mis-read this - I thought you were on about Tesco buying one of the nationalised banks.

I'd prefer it if they just reduced the price tbh. My current fave buy: Tesco Value Shampoo Mrs.(to be) Bucket is allergic to paraben which is present in most beauty products. She currently buys posh shampoo at £6 per 300ml. The above? 26p per litre.

I think much the same. I stopped at Tesco today and ended up buying 1.5Kg of pig, which is far more than I can eat. It was a "buy two for £5" offer which was too large a saving to ignore. The result is that I'm going to have a baking and freezing session going on until the small hours. I'd much rather have received a voucher to be redeemed against next week's purchase. Annoyingly, I do remember that I am forgetful. I did actually have a 30p voucher for something or other, but I've left it 60 miles away at a friends house

The reason for that is quite simple. There's no profit in reducing price alone, provided the price is competitive. With multi-buy savings, the customer is encouraged to buy more stuff from this shop. If I had not bought two packs of pig from Tesco today, I may well have bought meat from Sainsbury next week instead.

Yes but most people I know really don't shop like that - they go to the same shop week in, week out.

BOGOF's are good and this idea seems, generally to be quite a good idea. I suspect however that quite a few poepl will indeed forget or loose the vouchers so Tesco will end out the winner. They wouldn't do it otherwise. I do however prefer half price (which Tesco certainly do from time to time on some things) rather than BOGOF.
The thing that really bugs me in Tesco is the way they are completely inconsistent in the way they calculate 'per item' costs on some things. It's clearly designed to confuse people into buying more than they need or to pick up the more expensive pack. For example - 6 pack will list a price each whereas the single item will show £/100g or something. It makes it much harder to work out which one is the better deal without resorting to a calculator.

Are you not exactly the kind of customer they are aiming at though. Buy your tins there and then, but is it not better for you to buy 1 loaf of bread now and then come back next week to get the second for free? That is what you have said you do now but you have to pay the second time you go into the supermarket.

It's a good idea, but why can't they just use my clubcard?
When I buy the item and use my clubcard it should regsiter that I have a free one waiting. Next time I purchase one and use my clubcard it's free.
Simples.

Seriously? I find that very hard to believe. Surely no one can be that boring or lazy, except on soap operas!

I spent about 10 minutes today weighing things in Tesco and adding up on my calculator application on my mobile. I don't mind doing that, because it's obvious that they obfuscate the best value in order to make profit. I'm quite happy for stupid and lazy people to pay for the cute check-out girl's salary. What does annoy me is when the label says "out of stock" when they quite clearly have stock, but you don't know how much it costs! Today, I did not purchase courgettes because of this problem. There were some over-packaged courgettes in a 3 pack on a bogof, but I didn't want 6 and they do not freeze well. The fresh ones were labeled as "out of stock" despite there being a huge pile of really nice ones!

I like the idea, but we have recently switched to Morrisons. It’s closer (a walk away, not a drive), and the £50 weekly shop from Tesco comes in at around £30 at Morrisons. ClubCard points be damned!
