all electronic equipment is barred from use during take-off and landing, which are surely two of the biggest pressure points for those who are scared of flying.

On my first (and probably only) trip to the USA, the landing and taking off were OK. It was the excessive turbulence whilst at altitude, the sudden changes in engine pitch and the way the false wall moved in relation to the cabin that did for me. I was a nervous wreck by the time we landed at Atlanta, and then I had to face the grilling. It’s a wonder I got in to the country.

If I have to cross the Atlantic again, I’ll be asking my GP for some tranqs.

Does the iPhone have a flight safe mode?

You'd presume so.

It's perhaps for the best then that you never looked out of the window and saw just how much the wings flex up/down going through turbulence.
It always brings a grin to my face.

I'd rather that than imagine the load going through them and the potential for them shearing clean off.

A few years ago I had a lads holiday to crete and experianced flying for the first time. My friend was being all supportive (as blokes are  ), muttering to me "were all going to die" and "can you swim if the plane crashes into the sea".
I calmy pointed out to him as we were sitting next to the wings we were in prime position to fry like a Guy on bonfire night. Thanks to the proximity of those lovely fuel tanks
