I know a few of our members have had problems with Kaspersky's software on their PCs...

Good for them. I hope it makes them millions. It'll likely not, but I hope it does.

Does it make me abad person to say that I’m not running my computer for the benefit of others? It’s not up to me to protect other people’s machines from badness.

Nope.

I have Windows, Linux and OS X machines here and only the Windows ones have AV software on them.

What you say is true. Nobody expects you to run your computer for the benefit of others or to protect other people's machines.

However, if in your ignorance you chose to forward an infected file which either caused damage to or set off virus-alarms on many of your contact's computers, then you might find your respectability plummet.

Like many things, the choice is yours. I choose not to run antivirus on my Windows PC because I'm infallible. I could never download or distribute malware. Others might see that as arrogance, but I know better.

In Germany, you are actually liable if you infect other peoples computers.

We had one customer's web server infected with a SQL Injection attack, which then went on to attack other random servers. The management were in panic, because if it had successfully infected any other machines, we would have been responsible for damages and repair costs to those servers. Unfortunately the hacker that hit the site was from outside Germany, so the buck would have stopped with us. Luckily we picked it up quickly and managed to stop it before it caused any further problems.
