The Civil Service is finding out this week. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8355504.stm Personally, the answer is “yes”. We both have mobiles, and if someone really needs to get hold of us, they’ll use that. This is rare. I’m not a huge phone user anyway - I never have been. What I am though is a pretty heavy internet user. If the web went down, I’d suffer more (certainly on a business level) than if the phones went down. I know this all to well when half the town had a power cut last year. |

Mobile phones are just too expensive. They are fine for me and the purple one, but for my family back home, a landline is far cheaper... |

The only time I use the landline at home is to phone a company that's messed up, and even then I try to use the work phone, though that isn't ideal obviously... |

My internet comes through my landline, so yes, I'd be stuffed without it. It's also cheaper than using my mobile. |

We have our internet through the landline, but that's all. We both use our mobiles and don't have a phone connected to our landline. |

Other than using the actual line for our home 'net connection, I could quite easily live without it. I never, ever use the land line 'phone to make calls. Mark |

Oh, you should try it once in a while. There's something very retro and reassuring about using an instrument attached to the wall. ![]() |

There is. Especially the having to sit on my kitchen floor if the call is of a reasonable duration. It is cheaper than the mobile, though. And the french one has free landline -> landline calls after 7 ![]() |

Especially if it had a rotary dialler. |

Oh yes. And one of those braided cords between the base and receiver. At least they never got twisted into knots. |

My candlestick phone broke ![]() Out of interest, how many mobile providers give you anytime, unlimited talk time, landline to landline (fair usage applies, which usually means hang up after an hour and ring again)? I've seen a number of landline providers offer this, including Virgin, Orange and Tiscali... |

I knew you'd say that. If it comes to it, we have - currently, and don't ask why, since we appear to be a magnet for them - five wireless DECT handsets. Our answerphone, though, is a proper wired unit. It does SMS, too, apparently. |

I wasn't lying. I'll post a pic later as proof. Mark |
