Bumper sales of what exactly? Their processors are a generation behind Intel and they can't write drivers to save their lives.

Add to that the problem of having pissed off the entire *nix ecosystem and it should be clear why they struggle to make money.

Bumper sales of sub £100 parts = very little profit.

I don't know...when you have been re-branding the Athlon 64 for 6 years, they're probably very cheap to make now.

They might sell a few 5870's to people who can find them though..

AMD chips pack a punch for the price, I have yet to see an Intel chip that performs as well as my Phenom II 955 for a similar price.

Intel chips were second to AMD chips once, I have little doubt Intel will drop the ball somewhere.

You have not looked very hard...

Core i5 950, is 2 quid more at some retailers, some its cheaper than a 955 on offer.

Quote:
When converting a full-length movie from a DVD (MPEG2) to DivX format Core i5-750 was 16% faster than Phenom II X4 965 and 20% faster than Phenom II X4 955; rendering a sample project on After Effects CS4 Core i5-750 was 22% faster than Phenom II X4 965 and 26% faster than Phenom II 955; and compressing files with WinRAR Core i5-750 was 19% faster than Phenom II X4 965 and 22% faster than Phenom II X4 955.

Doesn't look like the Phenom 955 is similar performance to the i5, looks like its loads slower to me.

I've been using AMD and ATi for 10 years but I think that the point has come where I might have to fork out a bit more dough.

Quite simply, their prices might be attractive but the quality and support just isn't good enough.

I have an HP6735B laptop which is Turion 2.2, HD3200 as part of the 780G package running Windows 7 and its good, but had numerous probs with their desktop cards in Vista, a 3870 then a 4850 1GB, the drivers are very variable you probably already knew.

When is AMD's fusion out? 2010 or 2011?
Until they get a new architecture they can only compete with low prices for CPU's.
GPU's should net them a bit of cash next year though.
