I've banged on about this to patients and some respond really well and some don't. Newly diagnosed diabetics go on an education course where they are informed about diabetes and the risks. They are then monitored on a regular basis by the diabetes nurse.

The problem is that despite all this, some patients will continue to not bother their diabetes. Whilst I accept that it is a person's responsibilty, what I hate is the multiple hospital admissions required because they can't be asked to control their diabetes. In this case, I think a three-strikes system would be awesome - if you require three multiple admissions because you haven't been controlling your diabetes (as opposed to being difficult to control even by diabetologists), then you shouldn't be allowed back into hospital.
