The whole Psystar thing is a hoax. People even went to their offices to try and contact them or buy a PC off them and they couldn't. Some believe it to be just a straw man firm made by Apple to show what happens if you try and put OSX on any hardware but their's and sell it. Anyway, they PC's they were selling were not that good for the money, spec wise anway. |

Ah you've got to love the conspiracy theories don't you. Not sure about it being an Apple front though. That seems a bit convoluted even for Steve Jobs. I thought it was more credible that it was someone like Dell or HP stumping up the cash. If, as appears to have happened, Psystar got squashed they haven't lost much. If it won then they would be free to sell their own PC's with OS X on them. Unless someone manages to find out where Psystar was getting its money from I guess we'll never know. |

So software wasn't the only thing Psystar took from Apple then. |

I find it hard to believe that a couple of blokes in a shed (or wherever small businesses like this start in the USA) have the resources to take on Apple, and to keep on resistance. Their legal fees must be immense. I have always felt that there are larger players in the shadows with a vested interest providing the funds. I am convinced that Psystar is a larger company’s black project. |

They aren't 'conspiracy theories' they are findings of investigative journalism. At the end of the day, you can find a conspiracy anywhere you look, about anything, its too convenient to just label anything you don't want to hear as that... http://gizmodo.com/380488/psystar-expos ... ike-a-hoax http://mac.blorge.com/2008/04/16/mac-cl ... they-make/ http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/bl ... whatispsys http://www.psystar.com/ Go on their site and try and place an order, as people have done, it says your order cannot be taken or the page times out. So much for a conspiracy theory that is easy to prove correct. |

So where's the bit that says Apple are behind Psystar then? All I see is a small company trying to appear bigger than they clearly are. For a review of Psystar's offerings, try this. It's simply not true that nobody has received an item from the company - there were certainly reviews up online of customers, even videos of the machine booting OS X. What is probably true is that they've wisely decided not to actively take any more orders until this case is over - the staff on the company probably number no more than 4 people with a bit of tech savvy. Who's bank rolling them is the much more interesting question - and I've not seen anything to support the Apple, Dell, Compaq theories other than convenience. They could also, of course, simply be a lottery winner or someone with a large trust fund who's rubbish at cash management. |

Well I did say 'some believe' to place emphasis that I neither knew it was true (or cared). Why go to all the bother when there were plenty of Mac's that were/are available that were probably better buys and worth more if you wanted to sell them on. The point is some people believe Apple are behind this to stop other firms trying the same thing, as it happens this firm 'Psystar' aren't as genuine as they are being made to be. |

Apple don't use loud fans, for a start, they design their machines to be nearly silent, not sound like jet aircraft taking off! To the actual motherboards and chips, they are limited to selling what Apple support, unless they invest money in writing their own device drivers... |

Have you ever been near a Mac Pro? They are far from "near-silent" in my book. |

From price/performance, they are competing against the iMac and Mac mini, those are near-silent. ![]() |

The iMac and Mini are near silent, but they can be as they are effectively using a load of laptop parts. The Power Mac G5 had 9 fans and was noisy, and revved up the fans and was rather irritating. The Pro has 4 fans or something and it quieter, but people fitting video cards like the 8800GT or the earlier X19XX cards found the design of the case could not cool these cards effectively when doing anything more ambitious than twizzling a jpeg round. |

Err.. mine is. The only time the fans kick up at all seems to be when it's running windows under boot camp. Jon |

+1. I’ve an external HD which is noisier. I would suggest that if a MacPro is making a lot of fan noise that you open the thing up and move the clogs of dust it’s likely to have accumulated. |
