Probably for a similar reason that Magneto Optical discs were popular for long term archiving. Lawyers, governments and the like tend to store or have to store documents for a very long time.
The question is how well the cost compares with other long term archival mediums.

I'm guessing it's just a better solution than having to reburn DVDR/RW's every couple of years.

Sony will buy the company out, otherwise it won't be able to release a "new" and "improved" disc format for the consumer drone idiots to go out and replace their Vince Vaughan and Bourne box sets every five years.
