If it's any consolation, HMRC have been telling me on their VAT returns it's going back to 17.5%.
So the retailers are stupid. Of course, that doesn't mean it might not rise in the next budget...

I hope its not true. If the 15% VAT rate was supposed to get us all out and shopping then wouldn't a 20% VAT rate do the reverse?

Yes BUT it would raise a lot on money and at the moment they are very short of it If its not VAT then it will be income tax

It says, in black and white, on my last VAT return: The rate will not be going higher in January; it's simply returning to the rate it was at before the stimulus cut. Of course there's nothing to stop a future government bringing the UK VAT rates in line with the rest of Europe. As I understand it, we managed to get a special dispensation from Brussels so we could keep it below 19%. My paltry Love film subs were £3.99. With the help of the generous gov and the nice vat controller this went down to £3.91.
All I want to say is big deal and it really helped a lot. But what I will say is do something that not only helps, but stimulates too. The 8p difference made no difference. I cancelled the sub and as many others as I could to make ends meet. Get with the programme darlings and do something constructive. Blair/Brown have been a non event since 98 and they got in cos the others were worse don't forget (gave it away really)./rant

This could, or could not happen. It may just be a way for the retailers to try and, well, "encourage" us to go out and spend now before the "possible" 20% VAT comes in.
Mind you, Jan 1st it's back up to 17.5% so it may be wise to buy now although, saying that, it is funny that many prices still end with the .99 like they did before the VAT drop.

Great, couple the return to 17.5% with another pay freeze next year and a possible hike from 17.5% to 20% and I'll be getting a real reduction in income.
Compound that with the pay freeze I got earlier this year and I might have to stop eating.

If I had to live anywhere in Europe, I think Germany would be the last place it would be. Spent many months there in the Armed Forces, and they have to be the most arrogant people in the World. Even some of the American and French troops were shocked ! New Zealand, Switzerland, Ireland are some of the places I would want to move to though.

Unless of course we get an "emergency" budget. I would prefer a rise in income tax TBH, it's more 'fair' that way.
