It'll be about as popular as a fart in a spacesuit I reckon, though Phorm must be jealous ;)

<pedant>No-one else is going to notice a fart in a space suit.</pedant>

It is a ruddy silly idea though.

It is no different to the branded screensavers and backgrounds that have been going round for the last 20 years, apart from Microsoft are bundling the backgrounds and screensavers into one place where people can download them.

I think this is more "fan bait" than pure advertising. Look at the brands that are advertising so far, companies like Ferrari and Ducati (plus Coke and the Avatar film). A lot of people already have Ferrari screensavers or wallpaper, having half a dozen images that change during the day and the screensaver all rolled into one package, which is hosted on a central website and guaranteed to be virus free is a good option.

I don't think it will work as advertising for all companies, you aren't going to download a Cif or Cillit Bang theme, but I can see a lot of people downloading the prestige brand themes.

The patent application by Apple if used is so much more scary than a Coke theme. IIRC it involves an ability to stop you carrying on with a task ntil you acknowledge the advert.. now thats intrusive!!!
