Unless a healthcare "professional" has particular concerns for child safety, I don't think H&S should step in.

Accidents are called such for a reason.

That's not the official line offshore. BP's attitude is:

I'm guessing BP's view would be that clumsy people are a liability and should be shot?

No their attitude would be "clumsy people would be removed from the rig if they kept causing unacceptable risks to people or equipment."

Thats interesting as in August I fractured my ankle when my foot slipped offa step going down some stairs at work. The tread on my shoes was nice and deep. The carpet on the stairs (with anti slip part as well ) wasn't worn. I was paying attention going down the stairs,, My hand was on the rail and I wasnt going down fast.
Yet my foot did slip and my ankle was fractured. In this wonderful world sh1t does happen and sometimes causes cannot be prevented.

I guess the attitude would be different for a company responsible for the pay and health and safety of it's employees on a floating bomb.

I would be interested to know what they mean by “greatest risk of unintentional injury”, i get the impression this may be a non-story and there may actually be some valid reasoning.

There is a major difference between an oil rig and a family home. I can quite see that an oil rig needs safety at the top of the list, but should we be considering such an intrusive measure for our homes.

No parent wants their child injured or hurt, but at the same time we have to remember that accidents can be a very good way of learning. I am sure that many of us have learned what we can and can’t do partly due to accidents. Falling off bikes, cutting fingers while making Airfix kits, pricking fingers with needles when sewing and so on. Even the act of walking up and down stairs is cause for concern. Normal, every day life means that you may not end the day with the same number of digits than when you started. You may not even survive it. I am not saying that your house could and should be a death trap, but I feel very uncomfortable with the idea of someone turning up to inspect the house for “health and safety” reasons.

What we don’t want to do, but I can see this happening, is that we will produce a generation so devoid of the notion of danger that they will all wipe themselves out due to being incapable of spotting a genuine threat.

Unfortunately it's already happening. Someone is always to blame and no one has responsibility for their own actions anymore.

the only way to go down the stairs more safely would be to sit on my backside and gently lower myself down each step whilst in a full harness with at least 2 safety guys around me

Death is caused by being born. I trust this will be outlawed shortly.

I'm afraid you'd need 4 guys. 2 to support you, one to supervise & another to do the risk assessment & relevent paperwork.

If H&S were there at the dawn of Man, we'd have died out long ago. No fires. No wheels. No hunting. etc
