No matter what this is actually for, they can expect controversy...

I know a few people who pirate TV shows. Hardly any use P2P. They just know people who have what they want, plus a USB hard drive in and do a direct copy.

That's technically still a 'peer to peer' copy :).

Anyone know how to subvert this.

What exactly are you asking? You've read the rules. You know we can't talk about this (although it's easy to do)

I was curious as to what peoples responses were going to be, I should've stated I wasn't looking for a technical discussion on the relative merits of tor versus in built encryption of torrent clients and the use of magnet links etc.

If virgin are using this I don't think other ISP's will be far behind because I don't think this is about copyright infringement (although that's one use) it's more to do with determining what types of traffic are more prevalent and therefore potentially more profitable.

Good comeback.

I think the TLA you need to know is SSL

I always get confused between ssh and ssl.

One will stop packet inspection, one won't

The problem for an ISP is if it go’s alone is that people will leave if it gets to draconian. It will only work if all the ISP’s do it together. Unless it is mandated in law then I bet one will eventually do a marketing campaign along the lines of “We don’t watch your downloading habits”

In the end people will do it until there is an acceptable legal alternative

Take this scenario. I want to watch a series on my netbook. I have the legit DVD box set. My Netbook does not have a DVD drive

So I can
Rip the DVD’s (illegal)
P2P the DVD’s (illegal)

In the end all I want to do is watch some stuff that I have paid for

Isn't there some law that allows you to legally make a copy for backup purposes?

Argument being that you have paid for a license to watch the film on the media you purchased. So if you buy a DVD, the DVD is what you have to use.

But some films are being realised on BluRay ALONG with a digital copy for computer viewing. So you can do this legitimately for some titles.

Not in th UK there isn't - I think Big_D says there is one in Germany

The issue us that to make a copy you need to "hack" passed the region encoding and that is illegal

Surprisingly, there is a program called AnyDVD which isn't actually illegal.

I find all these laws a little draconian. I mean, you buy the DVD with your own money, so that should allow you to do whatever you want with that DVD because it's your property.

Anyway, back on topic. Isn't traffic snooping an invasion of privacy? It sounds just like Phorm to be honest. You can very easily evade this by changing one setting in your torrent program.

I can see Tor and the likes becoming very popular over the next few months.
