Labour has urged First Minister Alex Salmond to shelve his plans for a referendum on Scottish independence and concentrate on fighting the recession... The Tories and Liberal Democrats also hit out at the SNP's referendum plans, which will be published on Monday.

The sheer fact that the 'big three' oppose it all makes me think the SNP might be onto a winner  , but then I know next to bugger all about Scottish politics ;)

Though it's obvious Labour's clearly desperate to sweep it under the carpet :P

The only things thats keeping Scotland in the union is Oil/gas and the fact the labour desperatly need the Labour MPs or face most of eternity in opposition.

Scotland as an independant nation would be well and truly up the spout.. especially when the Oil/Gas runs out.

I would have been all for it but then Scotland would have been well and truly buggered if England & Wales didn't bail out the banking system.

But then it's the Scots choice to make. If they send a bill down South for the oil they own (not all of it is Scottish AFAIK, Lev?) then a bill can be sent North for RBS.

Labour hate the idea of independence as that'll mean they lose loads of seats in Westminster and the Tories will lose none. It would make it harder for Labour to win a general election for England & Wales.
I wonder how many Scots would vote for independence when they realise that they'd no longer get the financial advantage from the Barnett formula. (which is worth more that oil revenue in Scottish waters)

EDIT

Where would they draw the line for ownership of the oil?

(Warning, 5mb download.)

If they followed the line of the boarder, the English would get quite a lot. However I expect the Scots would want it to follow 56 degrees North.

They would vote for it then complain when it goes balls up and want to be bailed out by the EU

Nope all the Irish had to do was keep on voting until they got the right result.
Going forward the Irish are going to have a harder time as the eastern european countries all count as worse off and thus more money will go to them. The price of enlargement, means less cash for those that were at the bottom of the pack.
Thus you get Dell closing the irish operatioons to move to Poland all funded by the EU
