So it's clearly a nonsense regarding DVDs you've bought (as in this case), but what about DVDs you've rented and copied, or borrowed off a mate and copied?

No it isn't ( except in a very few specific examples - e.g. taking a short extract reseach puropses etc) There is no Fair Use Policy in the UK
