Some of the group waved placards with slogans such as "Protect Women, No To Sharia" and "No Surrender".

Quote:
The English Defence League emerged from the angry scenes in Luton last March when a group of Muslims protested as the Royal Anglian Regiment paraded through the town on its return from Afghanistan.
When a counter-demonstration under the name of United People of Luton led to arrests, local football supporters decided something should be done.
They found common cause with other "soccer casuals" and "firms" associated with major clubs. The chatter concluded that this was a national problem and they had to put aside club rivalries.

In short: football hooligans.

Winston Churchill? Gerry Adams? The Alamo? It's actually not that uncommon a phrase.

700 coppers? For 11 arrests? I'd bet there were less than 700 protesters. I hope there wasn't anyone being assaulted/burgled/mugged etc in Nottingham while they were all standing around in their riot gear.

Over here, that phrase is so associated with Loyalism (which is a phrase I've never liked, but then I don't like Nationalist either  ), it's unlikely to ever change, in that respect.

And yes, those police numbers are ridiculous, those are more akin to the officer numbers at Drumcree than those who would deal with two small groups...
