Post subject:  Graduates should pay for civic service, Demos says

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8397152.stm

Quote:
Graduates should pay a higher rate of interest on their student loans to pay for a national civic service scheme, a report by Demos think tank has said.

It also called for university students to do 100 hours of community service and employers to let workers carry out one week of civic service every year.

It says graduates should put something back in return for their education.

...

The service would help communities, ease the burden on public services and make young people more employable, the report said.

It would see people mentoring young children, working on environmental projects or being a community support officer with the police.

All for a wishy-washy load of w@nk? That's one of the stupidest proposals I've seen in a long time...

I will post two words on behalf of students everywhere:

"F uck off".

I already pay for my university education and I refuse to be drafted for slave labour.

They usually do.

Unless we're planning to rely totally on imported talent or revert to a pre-industrial society, then we need educated people. The best way to get educated people is by, err, educating people.

I could understand it if students still received grants but they have to pay for their education, for a long time.

This is nonsense.

Six years at medical school means I have a debt of around £18k. During my first year of employment, I had around £120/mth deducted from my pay. When I got my student loan statement. The money I had paid did not even cover all of the interest!

What the fudge?!?!?

We were all told we would only pay inflation in terms of interest and that essentially we would be paying off the loan. Lies. Damn lies.

When everyone of those fat b*st*rds in parliament, the civil service, this frikkin so-called think tank and the the rest of the older graduates does 100 days community service to pay for their FREE degree then I might think about it.

Until then, get bent.

Wouldn't that be the three grand (or more) of fees they pay every year? Or the income tax that they pay afterwards. If university really does work and get you a better paid job, then they'll pay more income tax anyway.

The fees you pay are a contribution and come nowhere near to covering the total cost.

But the increased income tax you'll pay for the rest of your working life does.

It's little more than that, not far from the 'Young people should do national service' mentality that some people haven't quite thought through IMO

This is something I thought was a good idea 5-6 years ago. Please enlighten me as to why it's a bad idea.

1) It's state sponsored slavery.
2) You are breaching people's civil and human rights.
3) You are teaching teenagers/young people how to use weapons and kill people.

We still have national service over here - every male has to do it at 18, 9 months (talk of reducing it to 6, but the Ambulance service is saying that it would then make the Sozialdienst a waste of time and money, they'd only get about 3 weeks of work done, once they've finished training).

In Germany, conscientious objectors can opt to do civil service, instead of national service, which is essentially ambulance service, working in old people's homes and other "caring" professions.

Women can opt to do national/civil service or not.

So essentially everybody has done service of one form or another, before they go to Uni or looking for an apprenticeship.
