Quote:
The burglars tied up and threatened to kill Hussain and his family but a teenage son managed to escape and alert Hussain's brother, Tokeer.

The intruders fled when help arrived at the house in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, but the brothers chased and caught one, Walid Salem, a criminal with more than 50 previous convictions. He was then subjected to what Judge John Reddihough described as a "dreadful, violent attack" by the Hussain brothers.

Salem was left with a permanent brain injury after he was struck with a cricket bat so hard that it broke into three pieces. The revenge attack was self-defence that went too far, Reading crown court was told.

Now, if somebody did that to me and I got the hold of them while carrying a cricket bat, I'd use it to have a fair go at putting them in a wheelchair. Don't think I'd smash them round the head with it though

I can see the judges point in this case, especially since nobody's gonna like the outcome...

I usually hate thugs, but I'm for the Hussain brothers in this one. If someone tied up my family like that I'd give them a good beating too.

I have mixed feelings with this kind of stuff. On the one hand I think they might have gone a little over the top but then I'm also thinking if someone threatend to kill me and my family I'd be pretty swing happy with the old cricket bat.

If these crims dont want to be beat with sporting goods then maybe they should chose another career path!

If they had fought on the premises, fine. If they had caught him, after he scarpered, used "reasonable" force to detain him until the police could take him into custody, fine. Chasing him down and beating him senseless? No.

I feel sorry for the brothers, but I think that they went too far, given that the immediate danger was over.

No offence but if someone tied up my family, I'd probably be vexed to the point of blind fury too so completely understood what they did. Don't condone it but I can completely understand why they did what they did and can honestly say in the same position, I'd do a similar if not the same thing. Though I'd do it systematically - break their legs so they can't run, break their arms so they can't defend themselves, break their ribcage so they can't breathe and then break their skull to put them out of their misery.

I wonder if there's any chance of drafting this sportsman into the England Cricket squad?

we should have similar laws to America (one of the few i agree with)
if they enter your property without consent you can shoot the barstewards

and i do hope that the scum that got a good hiding remains brain dead and can not and/or will not ever be able to wipe his own brain dead arse …

Now that's why you should finish the job properly. If they'd disposed of the them suitably, they wouldn't be going to prison.

Hmm.....

Head says "Once he was out of the house it surely couldn't have been self-defence"
Heart says "You come in my house, you're dead. Slowly"

The burglars deserved death.

But I think being brain-damaged is much more amusing.

So props to the Hussain brothers ^_^

Three masked men break into your home. They tie up your family and threaten to kill you and your children. They force you to crawl from room to room, as they rob you and ransack your house. You escape and find yourself in possession of a cricket bat. What would you do?

Munir Hussain, a businessman from High Wycombe, chased the burglars down the street with his brother, Tokeer. They caught the intruders and beat them. One, Walid Salem, was hit by a cricket bat with such ferocity that it broke in three pieces, and he was left with brain damage.

Justice was meted out. Then the law intervened. Hussain and his brother were sentenced to 30 and 39 months respectively for grievous bodily harm with intent. Salem escaped jail with a two-year supervision order. Salem, a career criminal, left hospital after two weeks, and was subsequently arrested for an alleged credit card fraud.

all this means is next time you are going to ensure that they are dead
as you are going to be sentenced any way you may as well make it worth while …

True but even in America if they fled your house and you ran after them then shot them, you would be prosecuted. Whether this was 'just' or not, no court anywhere would classify it as self defence.

Actually, I'd rather they weren't a lifetime burden upon the NHS thanks...

Lessons learned for this incident:
1) Unlike government claims, the law is not on your side
2) If it happens to you, finish them off.
