Apart from Twitter where every character counts, why does anyone need to shorten URL's? In most situations (forums/emails) it could be counted as a risk, you have no idea where this link is going to take you...

The Google ones are going to be checked against their own data apparently, but every so often you come across a site that'll stretch the page cos of a URL, or linking to it doesn't work the way it should for whatever reason etc... I'm ignorant of the overall process I should point out ;)

Sometimes Wikipedia URLs can't be shrunk because there's punctuation in it that isn't correctly recognised by the phpBB clicky creating code.
