So, we have an all-German team (Mercedes, Schumacher, Rosberg) up against an all-British team (McLaren, Button, Hamilton).

Okay, so McLaren are using German engines, but 2010 looks like it's going to be fun.

I sincerely hope that Schumacher still "has it" as this could be the beginning of the best F1 season since the Beeb lost the rights...

Isn't that a particularly inappropriate euphemism to use about an F1 driver, especially with Nikki Lauder still about?

Don't they both operate out of the UK?

I'm still hoping McLaren will do the business! :D

They may operate in the UK but are classed as a Gemran team in the championship.

Interestingly, there are more Germans on the starting grid this year than ever before...

Whatever happened to Ralph?

Yeah, that surprised me as well, when I saw the line-up. I think he has just taken to appearing regularly on Exklusiv and Klatsch as a celebrity turning up at parties...

I haven't followed any motorsport for about 4 years, so I'm not really up on what he is/was doing.

He's been driving for Mercedes in the German Touring Car Championship.

Actually, it is the Deutscher Touring Meisterschaft (German Touring Championship), that is the big engined, custom cars with a profile based loosely on the road going machines (Mercedes, Audi and Opel are usually the only manufacturers to take part, although a few privateers have made Mustangs which qualify over the last 10 years and it looks like Opel dropped out in 2009(?)). The hardware is a lot more hard core than the Touring Car Championship.

There were rumours that Citroen would join the championship in 2009, but they didn't.

*Dons motorsport anorak*

I called it German Touring cars because that's how it's usually referred to over here. As far as I know, there is no series in Germany that runs to the FIA S2000 Touring rules as used by the WTC and the BTCC.

The actual Deutscher Touring Meisterschaft ended in 1996, the current incarnation of the DTM started in 2000 is called the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters and has only featured, initially, Mercedes and Opel and then later Audi - the Mustangs were from the pre-96 era. Opel haven't competed since 2005. There is currently a possibility of a future tie-in with the Japanese Super GT Championship.
