Quote:
Sales of Rebel EFI , which Psystar launched in October, have been "voluntarily suspended" while the company seeks clarification from the courts about whether the software is legal, Psystar said in a December 22 statement.

By selling Linux PCs and Rebel EFI to customers, Psystar would shift responsibility for installing Mac OS X to its users.

....

Although Rebel EFI has been taken off the market, Psystar said customers who ordered a $15 t-shirt, or donated $20 or more to the company would receive a free copy when the utility goes back on sale.

The t-shirt's front reads "I sued Psystar" while the reverse reads "...and all I got was a lousy injunction."

The company has also asked for donations in $20, $50 and $100 amounts.

I know

It's cheaper, quicker and just as easy to do it yourself ;)

Rebel EFI won't get past the injunction, as far as I can see. It is the key to tricking OS X to seeing the host as an Apple machine and therefore is illegal under the DMCA, at least in America.

The EFiX device (similar) is legal in parts of Europe, but not here in Germany - although, due to the packaging of OS X, it is legal to use OS X on non-Apple computers here; you just can't use EFiX or similar devices or hack OS X code to get it to work, as that is illegal... :?

AFAIK there isn't modification of the code

It's installing a pre-loader that gives a device ID of apple hardware that allows you to do it

That said there are plenty of configurations of hardware that work out of the box with the retail disc apparently

Yep, it is that bit which breaks the DMCA... Anything which circumvents Apple's restrictions breaks the DMCA and a similar law in Germany). If they have to use the Rebel EFI, they won't be able to sell computers which use OS X. Of they can find a way of using the shrink wrapped OS X on bog-standard hardware, with no modifications to OS X or running Rebel EFI/EFiX etc. then they might have stood a chance of selling hardware.

As it is, the court has also upheld the part of the licence which says that you can only install OS X on Apple branded hardware, which puts a big dent in their plans - but at least if the hardware would work with OS X, without Rebel EFI, they could have left the final decision up to the end user.

I installed OSx using the standard CD on the hardware I made my HTPC from,

People have installed using the standard disc without problems depending on hardware setup

that's a hell of a compatibility list …

That is JUST 10.5.8, the 10.6 list is growing too, it's a very popular area, get the Apple software cheaply & don't pay a premium for the hardware... it's pretty win win ;)
