It was far too dear at launch for many, especially as you needed a very expensive TV at the time to get the best out of it, and for years M$ and Nintendo raked in the profits on the games far as I can tell (though M$ obviously had severe QC problems

). I don't think many beyond the sort of people who visit tech sites and so on even really care about BR today, never mind when it was hyped as part of the 'PS3 experience'. IME, BR just currently isn't worth the cost no matter what way you're playing your discs today
I agree the PS3 works well as a 'hub' though - I especially enjoy iPlayer
