Anybody here know what the benefits of multi-core over the Cell might be? :?

Oh, and let's hope they learned some lessons from the PS3 pricing and the Go in general

And while we're at it, let's not have any more retarded statements like this one this time:

Quote:
Ken Kutaragi had this to say about Sony's goal for the PS3: "for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."

The PS3 was/is excellent value for money. Sony were selling them at a loss, and to be fair it was the cheapest Blu-ray player around at the time.

The PS3 is so much more than a games console, and it puts the competition to shame.

The advantage of multi core over Cell...

hmm...

The difference could be quite large.

The Cell processor is very fast but can only ever do one thing at a time. It has to calculate all the differnet numbers one at a time, player health, enemy health, player position, enemy position, which direction are you looking, which way you are moving, etc... and then repeat.

With a multi core processor you can stick the mundane repeatable tasks of running the game onto one core and use the other cores as dedicated cores to the more complex tasks within the game, i.e. players, npcs, etc...

You could prob have a core dedicated entirely to enemy AI, etc...

It was far too dear at launch for many, especially as you needed a very expensive TV at the time to get the best out of it, and for years M$ and Nintendo raked in the profits on the games far as I can tell (though M$ obviously had severe QC problems  ). I don't think many beyond the sort of people who visit tech sites and so on even really care about BR today, never mind when it was hyped as part of the 'PS3 experience'. IME, BR just currently isn't worth the cost no matter what way you're playing your discs today :?

I agree the PS3 works well as a 'hub' though - I especially enjoy iPlayer 8-)

EDIT - Thanks for that Olly :)

So a multicore Cell isn't going to happen then?

I've been reading rumours for months now that the Cell was being dropped by Sony for the PS4. IBM have also stopped aspects of development, but supposedly continue in other areas. Make of that what you will. I think Toshiba were also involved in it's development, weren't they? :?
