So, in almost 2/3 of the country houses are still unaffordable. I'd imagine that if you take into account the 30k deposit then that figure is rather much higher.

Yip, and that's before you get to people who suddenly find themselves out of work and/or trying to pay off debts

The same way I did. Living in a hovel for years, saving what you can. It took me over a decade to save enough for the deposit on my house, much of that time spent living in an uninsulated attic. Considering that I was earning less than half today's minimum wage and I still managed to save £20,000 it should be even easier for people today. Pah. Folks today, they've never had it so good!

"More areas cheap enough for first-time buyers..." ...because they're [LIFTED] and no-one wants to live there. I love the Westcountry, lowest wages in the country coupled with some of the highest prices (for both houses and utilities).

I bought my first house, with my brother, for 55K, I sold it for 120K, I hate to think how much it would be today.
Just bought a nice house in Bramsche, under 150K€ for 3 beds, lounge, dining room, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, 2 guest toilets, party cellar and office on 800 square metres of land... Looks like I got a bargain - although the renovations will cost a few K on top of that...

Also in today's news, but buried a bit - First-time home buyers at record low. Going back to the original link, the Halifax would have an interest in getting people to want to take out mortgages and the pushing of +ve news is purely a coincidence.

That does sound like a bargain. I remember comparable property being very much more expensive over there back in the 80s and 90s, but I guess we've caught up! What's the area like; I'm guessing it's a fairly rural location?
