Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the failed attack revealed there was a "new type of threat" which needed to be quickly addressed.

"First of all, in airports people will see gradually being brought in the use of full body scanners," he told the BBC.

"They will see checks for explosives traces that will be done on hand luggage. Transit passengers will also be checked as well as transfer passengers."

Mr Brown said it was impossible to know for certain that the new technology would work.

"We cannot be convinced of the absolute proof of the working at 100% level of any technology, that is absolutely true," he said.

"We have found that there is a new form of explosive that is not being identified by ordinary machines.

"We have got to go further. Our first duty is to the security of the people of this country."

Who the fcuk's Gordon been talking to exactly, especially to get movement on this so quickly?

It will have been at the start gate for some time now, just waiting for the signal.

and full body scanners at airports are going to stop the terrorist attacks, hmm

the most heavy defended building on the planet got hit by a (so called) aircraft
it is called the 'pentagon'

if that can not be defended with military might then no one stands a snow flakes chance in hell …

All the public controversy over these scanners and related privacy concerns and now suddenly that all goes out the window because G. Brown and his cronies have decided these scanners are a good idea.

These things produce naked pictures of people, I can't say I'm a fan of having my privacy so obviously violated.

It's not heavily defended at all.

Waste of time and impractical, especially as you can buy the things needed for an explosive once you've passed through security.

They seem to be trying to distract from the fact that the last guy was known to various intelligence services and the US was warned about him by his friggin' father to boot.

The only help a full body scanner would be is if we smack them over the head with it, the intelligence services that is.

Chasing our own tail springs to mind whilst not looking for an effective way to deal with the problem.

Airport body scanners 'unlikely' to foil al-Qaeda - MP

Nope, not at all. They're completely missing the point, as usual, and just doing things to appease public concerns.

That's OK - I don't fly anywhere now and gave up drug smuggling years ago

I don't have much desire to travel (haven't had a valid passport for years) and my mates are permanently broke anyway so it won't affect me personally either :)

Body scanners are to be introduced at Heathrow airport in about three weeks, Home Secretary Alan Johnson said.

He also told the House of Commons that all UK airports must have new "explosion trace detection equipment" by the end of the year.

I'll be interested to see if there's any anecdotal evidence of this putting people off flying :)

"Explosion trace"? By that do they mean burning airliners or flatten houses?

It could be another BBC website cock-up, or the latest in CSI tech. We just don't know ;)
