The people that have done the most damage to the music industry are... the music industry. Napster should of been a wake up call to them to improve and adapt to the changes in the world, not try to change the world.

wow using child protection and one of the most oppresive regimes in the world to back up your argument.
Saint Bono the tw*t, you surely are.

He's been listening to his twat of a manager too much...

How many of the file-sharers are his own fans I wonder? How many of his fans think, 'The last album was sh1te, I'll have a cheeky download first'

Oh, and there's still little proof that the people who download would have bought an album or track anyway - not even with the likes of iTunes in that sense, which is actually providing revenue for the industry ;)

I think he's missing the point. People aren't buying U2 records because they're sh1te.

TalkTalk slams "misguided" Bono for net piracy comments

Quote:
"As a society we have accepted that it is appropriate and proportionate to intrude on people's internet use by blocking access to sites that host child abuse images. To suggest that sharing a music file is every bit as evil as child abuse beggars belief."

Bono didn't, he was talking about the technology used, though he's still an arse for suggesting intrusion was the answer when:

Quote:
"P2P filesharing can be spotted (albeit at great cost) but there are dozens of applications and tools out there which allow people to view content for free and no amount of snooping can detect it."

If people aren’t buying U2 records because they are sh1te, then why aren’t they ;-)

In all honestly, I really, really hate it when the rich and successful moan on about this. U2 have made a packet both for themselves and for their publishers. Do they need to work any more? I suggest that it stopped being about the art and music a long while back for him, and it’s just become a wealth acquisition exercise.

Bono is seen regularly harping on about third world poverty, yet he remains extremely rich. I’d listen to him if he bankrupted himself like Geldof did when he was on the African poverty trip in the 1980’s.

Funny thing is the people that lose out are the musicians.

The 'contract' they get for an album deal is basically a loan, they are already screwed over by the music company.

The album sales usually just pay back the loan. The only real money is from live shows. Nine Inch Nails recognised this a LONG time ago and offer their new albums free, the new fans means they sell more tickets so make more money.

If they were to have selling albums they just get a small cut from loyal fans or the odd person buying it. The live music sales generate a lot more, especially in terms of sundries such as merch, posters, clothing etc.

Thats why there has been the rise of the so called 360 deals whereby the record company own everything. Your records, songs, merchandise, website, name, gig income in return for as little for the artist doing all the work.

I know quite a lot of new band musicians are startlingly naive but you'd have to be an utter utter moron to sign a contact like that. You'd probably make more money busking and working in an office than that contract would get you.

Madonna, Robbie williams and Jay-Z are all high profile names that have signed 360 deals. Live Nation try and insure all new acts signed to them are under these types of deals.
Also lets face it the standard contract (or even worse pre-contract) bands sign now, in any other form of business you would have to be a certifiable nutcase to sign.
