Isn't 2012 the next year in which the world is supposed to end?

Well, yes it is if you believe the misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar. In the Mayan calendar it's just the end of an Age rather than anything in particular happening and according to Mayan elders changes to the Earth are supposed to occur in a 7 year period around that date. Many of them believe the start date was in 2007 when Comet 17P/Holmes erupted and that the biggest change will be a magnetic pole shift, something which I've mentioned before concerning climate changes and previous magnetic shifts. There's plenty more on this on the NASA site.

We were discussing this at lunch yesterday. I think it's when the Aztec calendar runs out. General conclusion was it wasn't worth spending all the money on developping Stratford if it'll only be used for the Olympics and nothing else.

May Day is staying firmly put on 1st May here... Which means everything closed on Saturday this year. 2012 May Day falls on a Tuesday, which probably means most people will book the Monday off as holiday as well...
