Good. V8's are useless engines. I mean, 150hp from a 5 litre V8? The europeans can get like 200hp from 1.6 litres, and the Japs got 400hp from a 2-litre 4-cylinder engine. Although they do sound good. |

Oh my dear boy, let me educate you. In the 1970s, the US introduced smog legislation which left the manufacturers struggling to provide the horses. Add to that the slightly lower octane fuel (although they were unleaded long before us) and you're on a path of having lots of cubes but very much throttled back to meet legislation requirements. Those V8s were producing well in excess of 300-400bhp in family saloons all through the 60s. Today, you can order a ZR1 Corvette which has 638 bhp and 604 torques. And it'll run and run and run and run with service intervals your Jap 2 litre can only dream of. But yes, they do sound great. |

Fair enough. But Honda have made something like 100 million VTEC units, and not one has gone wrong. Not one! ![]() |

All engine designs fail somewhere along the line. Google tells me your claim is incorrect. ![]() |

Due to the users. If the engine just sat there it would be fine. ![]() Don't get me wrong, V8's are torquey engines and sound great, but I'd rather have a 9500RPM engine because its more...Lemme think of the term...precision than a pig iron V8 that was made by some Americans in the 60's. ![]() |

Does that include all V8's or just the big block V8? Because the latest V8 used by Ferrari in the 458 Italia revs to 9000rpm and I'm guessing sounds better than any VTEC. |

[whistful] They should never have got rid of the side-valves ... [shakes head sadly] ... Grandpappy used to make the wicks for those engines. ![]() |

Good. Bye. Personally I can't wait until they raise the energy storage density for electric motors. 1 moving part FTW! |

I must confess to generally preferring the sound of a V12 over the sound of a V8, however this is starting to sway me: http://www.sls-amg-special.com/ |
