A lot of places here ordered too little salt this year.
Now there are huge queues at the mines and their stockpiles will run out in the next couple of days, then the queue of lorries will be moving even slower, as they have to wait for the salt to be brought up from the mine and processed.

It's ridiculous. The councils are told to cut back on their supplies because weather like this 'doesn't happen'. Which is ridiculous, there have been much worse winters in living memory.

Funny, I was under the impression that local authorities had been ordered to increase the amount stored since last winter...

I'm sure a couple of years ago, the councils were told not to stockpile grit. Maybe I'm mistaken. However, take a look at the headlines from last year... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/w ... 645638.ecehttp://www.nce.co.uk/councils-running-o ... 29.articlehttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/ ... n-low.htmlYeah, running out of grit in cold weather is completely unexpected.

You may well be right, but as of last winter (as a result of those headlines you've posted) HMG ordered local authorities to stockpile at least 6 days worth of grit.

My fiancee just told me she saw on breakfast news a very hacked off Harrow councillor Susan Hall saying that they were perfectly well prepared with more grit supplies on the way, but then the goverment stepped in to "organise" it and now they're getting none! There's some of it on BBC news Video, but they've cut out the best bit where she explains that "the government can't even organise themselves, let alone run the country."

PM pledge on cold snap gas supplyhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8450176.stmYou'll probably find then that wherever you are, it isn't "where it is most needed"

The grit redistribution is typical New Labour; those councils who planned properly and acted sensibly have their grit taken away to give to those who didn't.

In true Animal Farm tradition, we will discover "where it is most needed" is outside MP's houses. Jon

Yup. It's a great comfort to me to know that the M1 is open, whilst our car is stuck fast in 8 inches of snow at the bottom of the estate with a 15 degree incline. I could shovel my way out in about 14 hours of work, but there's more on the way on monday. I should have copied our neighbours and parked up the top of the road, helping to block the place off entirely
