“Teenagers are spending more time communicating through electronic media and text messaging, which is short and brief," she told The Sunday Times. "We need to help today’s teenagers understand the difference between their textspeak and the formal language they need to succeed in life – 800 words will not get you a job.”

Have teenagers not always been unruly, listening to their rock 'n' roll noise, etc? The world changes, people change. Those that can't communicate today might be better communicate tomorrow, or perhaps they will 'grow up' and speak properly. After all, the article did say that they knew an average of 40,000 words.

She plans to send children with video cameras into workplaces so they can see the range of words used by professionals and share what they have learned with classmates, and wants parents to limit the amount of children under two watch to half an hour a day, replacing it with conversation.

Have you heard some adults talk? Honestly, sometimes it's no wonder that children are how they are today.

But David Crystal, honorary professor of linguistics at Bangor University in Wales, told The Sunday Times that experts simply did not understand the complexities of teen language and had judged it by their own standards.

I think I agree with him to a degree.

Thats only a relatively small, loud, irritating group of people my age who think a life in persuit of being an air headed socialite with thier other airheaded friends beliving what amanda said to stacy last week was the most important thing that happened in the world that week. Theres one in my a level politics:
" well labour had like made the like sure start sceme to help you know like the kids in poor famillies and stuff" would be an example.

It will target children in primary and secondary schools and she intends to ask QI presenter, author and prolific Twitterer Stephen Fry to back it.

Could be interesting if he goes ahead with it - I've seen him say that language evolves constantly, or words to that effect, a couple of times...

Ah, I see how they use so few words, they tend to miss out the verbs in sentences, although they seem to make up words as well.
