Since there were multiple cars on an unmanned crossing, I suspect signal failure. It wouldn't be the first time.

I have lived near a barriered crossing in the past – and used to see people swerve around it quite regularly

Christ... that's pretty nasty tbh. I'm just glad the train didn't derail in the process, could've been so much worse.
