The new figures come as the Scottish government pushes for a minimum price for alcohol to tackle the country's drink-related problems.

And that's mainly why I think the figures are a load of bollox...

Of course the so called recommendations for consumption were picked from the air and have no relation to what actually is the "safe" limit.

It said sales for the year to September 2009 averaged 12.2 litres of pure alcohol per person over the age of 18.

That's 23 units a week by my sums, which seems quite a moderate average.

Some people drink a lot more than others. I drink a lot more than is usually recommended; typically over 3 bottles of wine and a bottle of whisky every week which is 60 odd units.

I imagine for every teetotaller there is probably one of me, and there are those who drink over 300 bottles of vodka a year who would compensate for a lot of "light-weights".

Whisky is one of Scotland's few world-renowned exports, and booze in general contributes enormously to the UK economy and to tax revenue.

DRINK for Britain! It's Great!
