Any problems anyone?

I can't remember if I've got this update yet

Still a lower failure rate than the Xbox ;)
You'd have thought Sony would have tested any firmware updates before sending them out wouldn't you?

But they are trying.

I finally got a slim a couple of weeks ago when I finally found a good bargain.

It shipped with 2.85 (I think) and so the update out when I got it was 3.15, no problems whatsoever. Actually, it solved the one with the controller constantly flashing its lights and not seeming to charge.

It's run smooth since I've had it. As that's the case I may not update any further unless there becomes a dire need to do so.

I wonder if the updates are primarily affecting the older phat version?

That usually seems to be what happens going by a lot of forums, esp. the 60gb models

Sony do sometimes send out mandatory updates - you can't go online with your PS3 unless you install the patch first. Other than that, there's nothing in any of the upcoming patches that sound nice enough to bother updating frankly.

Well the older phat variants are probably more prone to failure at any given point than the new ones. Sheer chance suggests some phat PS3's are going to give up the ghost just after running a firmware update. It's a common human failing actually - we assume because two things that have some connection happen together there must be a causal link between them, when in fact it's just that two things with a certain likelihood randomly just happen to coincide.

You do get updates that are broken/badly coded that cause problems occasionally. Both the 360 and the PS3 have had them in the past but they usually get withdrawn and fixed pretty damn quickly. Most of the time, your console going pop just after a patch is coincidence - it'd probably have gone pop that day anyway, whether the patch was installed or not.

I may occasionally go online to watch the iplayer, aside from that I can't see any need to.

When I do need or want to update I may just hang back although, like you say, the phats are probably more prone to failure. Oh, hang on, my phat just failed, maybe now I should by a new slim..... Handy that eh?
