the person who wrote that article wrote:
And policemen manning checkpoints in Baghdad have told the BBC that you need to be relaxed to use the ADE-651 and that it does not work properly if the user is stressed or has a high heart rate.

In other words, the message which has got through to the frontlines is - if it does not work, blame the operator not the device.

oh really? does it get offended and refuse to operate if the user is in a bad mood? give me a break.

'Bomb detector' maker Jim McCormick arrested

What I don't understand is how these things ever got installed in the first place - surely to fcuk somebody had to test them and generally have a poke about beforehand? If so, arrest them too!

Selling bent coat-hangers for £40,000 a pop is something of a marketing coup.

The thing is, dowsing has been done for aeons and many people believe in it. My dad has used it a couple of times for finding water with great success, evidenced by the wells which were dug.

It's like homoeopathy; scientific evidence that it works is hard to come by because it doesn't claim to work by established mechanical methods. You might argue that the "program cards" are placebos, because dowsing relies totally on the mind of the operator. It only works if you relax, and you believe in it. If you can convince someone that it works, then it might. It rarely works for a sceptic.

This will not be a simple legal case. It really depends on the accuracy of any claims in the sales literature.

Good grief. This guy should be in prison, or better yet sent to Iraq, given one of his devices and sent out looking for IED's.

I can see at least some reasons for why dowsing would work for detecting water (flowing water, especially with a reasonable salt content, will produce a small electric potential difference compared with the surrounding dry rock). A pack of TNT, C4 or pretty much any other common explosive material most certainly will not.

There is an explanation for why homoeopathy works for some people. It's called the placebo effect. Given someone desperate enough something and tell them it will work and there is a very good chance they will feel better, at least for a short time. (You may have guessed I'm a sceptic)

Quote:
Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani, whose department bought $85m of the devices, said the ADE-651 had detected 16,000 bombs, including 700 car bombs.

OK, even if you were taking those figures from the very beginning of the war, I doubt they add up  :?

I suspect a Bic biro would have a similar score in the same situation.
