For once I have to say Microsoft FTW! As long a WGA only check if software is legit', there can;t really be an issue with it.

My understanding is that it wasn't what WGA did that was the problem but the way in which it was pushed out.
It's not a security update, it's revenue protection software.
In many cases it was installed as a result of deception (auto-install of critical updates) and then couldn't be easily removed or rolled back. It also wasn't exactly trouble free to start with IIRC, especially when the copy of windows that it crippled had been purchased in good faith or was installed on a complete PC.

Still, I don't think the people who filed the law suit had a hope in hell of winning either. Yours software update hobbled my illegal copy of windows was never going to work as a defence.
