Wouldn't that increase unemployement rates in younger generations, out of schools for example? :?

Assuming people would take them on. Okay, Asda & B&Q value old members of staff, but there's a lot of companies out there that won't touch people over a certain age (say mid.late 50's). That is illegal, but it would be very hard to prove.

I suppose the idea is that the retirement age of 65 means potentially another 30 years of pension payments, something that was rare when the arbitrary age of 60/65 was first introduced.

People are generally healthier and living longer. If someone is willing to continue to work and pay taxes, it helps offset the cost of paying their pension.

The counter to that is increasing numbers of younger people who won't find work, but then it strikes me there are already plenty of those who are also taking handouts from the state and not putting anything back...

Hmmm, dole money = £64 per week for six months (less for under 25's). Pension money = £95 per week forever.
They know there is a massive unemployment problem for the under 25's, so why do this to help the economy? Answer = just to cut costs. They can pay less to young people.

I'll be dead before I claim my pension. Makes me wonder why I bother paying it at all.

There are more not-young people taking handouts from the state and not putting anything back

There are also plenty of freeloading baby-boomers who got their higher education for free and once they were up the ladder improved pretty much f*** all, ruined the country and then insisted that the younger generations pay for it.

It wasn't young people who ruined the environment, destroyed manufacturing, made the banks supreme, decimated education and vocational training, generated a horrid middle-class culture of "me first and you can sod off", condemned thousands to vast sink estates where the prospects of good education and jobs are slim to nil and allowed the current financial meltdown.
