I must admit, the first time I saw an average speed camera about two years ago I reckoned that one day they'd be everywhere.

It'd be fine for people with cruise control. Set it at 70mph and sit back.

But I find it very easy to get up to 80mph without realising it.

And there will still be people who don't give a sh*t and speed down the outside lane at near 100mph.

It would maybe be better if they introduced the average speed limit cameras but at the same time raised the limit to 80mph.

Why have an opinion? We can't do anything about it.

If you want to avoid them there are plenty of other roads ;)

How long until they're everywhere though?
I'd say there was more sense in putting average speed cameras on some of the wriggly backroads people do 60mph down, rather than a relatively straight, large road people do an extra 10mph down...

Which is really good for safety. Imagine a whole motorway full of people whose only involvement in driving their 1+ton of metal at deadly speeds is to twiddle the steering wheel every now and then, in between twitter updates. The more cars get automated, the more removed people are from driving them, to the point where they're fatally distracted when they're really needed.
I've just come back from Egypt, where the driving is utter chaos. Road rules are largely ignored, lane discipline is a concept that some people may have heard of but nobody follows (imagine a 3 lane road with 5 lanes of traffic in it, all at 50mph+), and if you're not used to it, it's downright scary. But you know what? It works. Simply because everyone is paying attention to the road at all times, rather than switching off and letting their car do the driving.

Oh, FWIW, I can get better MPG driving manually at 80mph than I can at 70mph with cruise control :)

I just wish we didn't need things like this in order to make people drive properly....

... but we do ....

... because not only do people do incredible speeds but they insist that the laws of physics don't apply to them and proceed to sit 10 feet away from my bumper at 70 mph.

Especially if they drive an Audi.

Parasites.

Average speed cameras will do sweet f a. What's to stop me doing 140mph, stopping off for a long enough break to reduce my average to 70mph?

The 70mph speed limit was fine when cars of that era could barely manage that speed but nowadays most cars can comfortably hit 90mph and beyond.

Furthermore given that speed accounts for only 7% of all road traffic accidents, you can only whittle that amount down by small amounts. Larger factors are driver errors and road conditions. 70mph is not an appropriate speed on a flooded dual carriageway. Yes morons will still try to go at that speed but driver education is more important.

New technology will mean people who want to circumvent the speed cameras will be able to do so.

The key question is over what distance the average will be taken. Current "non-average" speed cameras still take your average speed, just over a very small distance. What if it's every mile? You wouldn't be able to avoid it that way.

Then it's only a little jump to installing trackers in every vehicle.

My issue is that we only got to this point because people have steadfastly taken the piss.

If there is a camera every mile I can't see people stopping that often...
